The 9-Inch Rule: Organizing Shoes for Ultimate Accessibility
July 1, 20263 min read
Why 9 Inches?
After building hundreds of custom closets, we've tested every shelf spacing from 6" to 12". Here's what we found:
- 6" spacing — Too tight. You can't see what's behind the front pair, and pulling shoes out is frustrating.
- 12" spacing — Too much wasted space. You lose entire tiers of storage.
- 9" spacing — The sweet spot. Every pair is visible, accessible, and stored without crushing.
The Capacity Math
With 9" shelf spacing on an 84" tall unit:
- You get 9 full shelves of shoe storage
- Each shelf holds 3–4 pairs front-to-back (depending on shoe size)
- Total capacity: 30–40 pairs in a single 30" wide module
That's your entire shoe collection in about 2.5 square feet of floor space.
How We Build It
Our shoe modules use the same solid maple construction as every other unit:
- 3/4" thick shelves that won't sag under weight
- White semi-gloss finish that wipes clean
- Adjustable shelf positions if you need to accommodate tall boots
Part of the Essential Line
Our shoe module is available as a standalone unit starting at $100, or as part of a combo configuration with hanging rods and drawers. It's the most popular add-on for walk-in closet projects.
Quick Tip
Store shoes front-to-back (toe to heel) rather than side-by-side. You'll fit 30–50% more pairs and every shoe stays visible.
